:::::::::::::: 0 :::::::::::::: This list is culled from the larger one at my Monster Barbershop Track List & Arrangements site - see that site for more info on recordings. Secular Christmas is included because it's difficult to split off from spiritual Christmas. I've been overly inclusive - some titles may be included here in error. Do not use this list to determine whether or not a song is competitively appropriate. I have examined lyrics to many of the songs, but not all of them. Hi everybody, Coming out of lurk mode for a little information, please. Our club (chapter) have brought Dave LaBar over to England to coach our chorus. (No, folks. We couldn't get anybody good. [That's what Dave said when we booked him!!]) At our club meeting on Sunday, one of the guys brought in a CD which he had bought in a local shop. Dave could not identify the quartet in question. The CD is called: "The Best of the Barbershop Quartet" "The Moonlighters Serenade" It lists the quartet line-up as: Alec Curran Tenor Ron Warren Lead Danny Robson Baritone Paul Mathias Bass These names are not known to me as members of BABS and the voices sound "American". The sleeve notes say: Recorded at Skin Deep Studios, England & Zenith Studios, Holland. Produced by John Vanderlindon for Rockridge Music. Copyright Tring International PLC. The back cover has at the bottom edge: Tring International PLC. Licenced from the Long Island Music Company Limited. Dave & I listened to this disc and both agreed that the guys singing were singers from within the society. The quality of the singing was pretty good - probably B+ to A- The tracks were mainly good barbershop and many were Society arrangements or charts from good barbershop arrangers. The full listing of the tracks is as follows: 6 You Can't Be A Beacon/Turn On Your Light Medley Copyright information for each track is shown but 4,8,10,11,14, and the second song in 6 are shown as "Copyright Control". Any information on who these guys are or where they come from would be welcome. I don't have a copy of that arrangement, but Dave Mittelstadt the bari from the Easternaires and director of Livingston) might have a copy. BTW, Bob Bohn arranged a great number of songs for barbershop that have not been published. This was probably because of the difficulty in making them "legal". It would be a great service to music and a tribute to Bob's memory if someone with the knowledge and perserverence (HG?) were to resurrect (and legalize) the best of those arrangements ones for perpetuity. Pitts, Recorded 1916 (Victor 17982-A) by The Victor Male Quartet: Lambert Murphy, Harry Macdonough, Reinald Werrenrath, William F. Hooley - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - All selections are public domain. This collection copyright (c) 1994, Heritage Hall Museum of Barbershop Harmony. All rights reserved. The Heritage Hall Museum extends its special thanks to Mr. Joseph Schlesinger, from whose collection of early 78rpm recordings these selections are taken Male close-harmony quartets were singing well before the birth of the recording industry. Their great success as popular entertainment led to their early involvement in the new media -- a quartet appears on an 1890 list of Edison phonograms. Artists often sang in several quartets simultaneously, with a different stage name for each "career". Quartets often released songs for competing com-panies under assorted aliases. Turnover in membership was common as quartets burst into life, merged, split, spun off new combinations, and faded from the scene. The Edison Male Quartet began making cylinder recordings for Edison in 1894. Within five years they were also singing for Victor as the Haydn Quartet, and by 1909 were exclusive Victor artists. The Whitney Brothers Quartet, composed indeed of four brothers, began singing for Victor in 1908. This familial foursome also recorded for Edison. The Columbia Male Quartette formed during the 1890s to make cylinder recordings for Columbia. By 1906 they had become the Peerless Quartet, and recorded for a number of companies, but were still released under the Columbia Quartette name by Columbia until 1912. The American Quartet was revived in 1909 as a star vehicle for Billy Murray, who was under contract to both Victor (for discs) and Edison (for cylinders). The quartet sang as the American for Victor and as the Premier for Edison until 1920, when Murray signed an exclusive contract with Victor; from then on, another quartet recorded for Edison under the Premier name. The Imperial Quartet was actually an ever-changing amalgam of Victor studio artists that sang under the Imperial name. The stellar in Columbia Stellar Quartette referred to the quality of the voices in Columbia's premier quartet. The tenor "possessed a voice of great range and beauty"; the lead was a great oratorio soloist; the baritone a concert singer of "rare excellence"; and the bass known for the unusual clarity of his voice. The Victor Male Quartet also recorded as the Orpheus Quartet; famous under both names, they sang for Victor from 1911 to 1918. The Peerless Quartet was perhaps the most famous and longest-lived of all the early male recording quartets. An offshoot of the Columbia Male Quartette, it survived personnel changes and remained active until 1928. They sang for many record companies, and at times were released under a dozen or more aliases -- one for each label. The Shannon Quartet formed as the Shannon Four in 1917. The loss of their original tenor in 1923 triggered a steady stream of replacements, and the quartet eventually became known as The Revelers. They sang under a variety of names, but kept the Shannon name for old-fashioned quartet work. - - - - - - - - To make these early disc recordings, a quartet was ushered into a bare room which served as the recording studio. A horn protruded through one wall, attached to the actual recording equipment on the other side. Standing about 12 inches away from the horn, the quartet started singing. They stood as still as possible, because the horn picked up every deep breath, cough, and foot shuffle. They leaned back on the very high or very loud tones, so that they wouldn't "blast' the grooves with the power of the sound. There was no audience to play off of, and the horn absorbed so much sound they had trouble hearing themselves sing. On accompanied songs they were drowned out by the orchestra, playing in tiers behind them. After several practice recordings, they made three "perfect" masters. Each recording was examined under a microscope to check for broken or irregular grooves, which rendered the master worthless; only a smooth, unbroken groove would produce a good record. Even the best masters were good for only a limited number of reproductions; it was not uncommon for a studio quartet to spend an entire day singing a handful of popular songs over and over, making master after master. - - - - - - - - Most of the songs on this tape were ori-ginally recorded using the acoustic method described above. In 1925, Victor debuted records made from electronically recorded masters. The final song on this tape illustrates the new technology. The Heritage Hall Museum extends its special thanks to Mr. Joseph Schlesinger, from whose collection of early 78rpm recordings these selections are taken, and to Mr. Jack Baird, for information on the Imperial Quartet - - - - - - - - :::::::::::::: coffman :::::::::::::: Date: Mon, 18 May 1998 12:05:52 -0500 From: Marti Lovejoy LovejoyMar@WORLDNET.ATT.NET Subject: Re: Thank You ... (If you hand-write this information, please write legibly!) c. A check or money-order for $7 (U.S. funds) per P.D. arrangement to me at my address above. Sending cash through the mail is risky, but you might get away with it if you disguise the cash within the envelope. I strive for prompt turnaround (48 hours) of all orders. CAUTION: Please, please pick charts at a level of difficulty that YOU CAN HANDLE. There is no reward in any venue, especially Contest, for "degree of difficulty." Gessner, #209 Houston, TX 77071-1059, U.S.A. E-mail: TBone@jetson.uh.edu (at work only) Home phone: (713) 777-4644 (it's best to call 8 p.m.-midnight Central Time). Please order from Kenosha any arrangement keyed as "not P.D.; copyright is cleared." When I can afford it, I apply for "permission to arrange" on the charts for which clearance fees still must be paid. Please contact me directly about those charts so that I can first submit the required fees and paperwork to the authorities before sending such charts to you. I strive for next-day turnaround on requests for listed P.D. arrangements. In preparing my charts, I have taken great pains to ensure legibility -- and, for ease of learning & rehearsal, all measures are numbered. In general, I will charge NO MONETARY FEE for my P.D. material. Kenosha's fees are quite nominal. If you request more than three arrangements from me at once, your donation of $1 (to defray postage) will be appreciated. If you request a chart for which clearance fees have not yet been paid, I would definitely appreciate a donation from you of $15, which will defray the standard charges for legal "permission to arrange." I *DO*, however, require the following: a} a cassette recording of your ensemble singing my charts, when learned; and b} feedback on any spots or passages in my charts that have proven inordinately difficult for you to tune or sing. It's the responsibility of any conscientious arranger to fix such places (if possible) for subsequent performers. Thanks. All of my material is for male voices only. Most of it is contestable (usually exceptionally so). The most important thing of all is for you to pick charts that YOU CAN HANDLE. There is *NO REWARD* in any venue, especially Contest, for "degree of difficulty." I would gladly see all of my arrangements remain unsung than to witness (or hear of) a quartet falling flat because of biting off more than could be chewed. If you end up selecting one of these that proves too difficult overall, shelve it for the time being. Sing something simpler instead, and revisit my stuff in a few months to see if it will work better. A final favor: Every time you sing one of my arrangements, in rehearsal or in any venue, take a solid, ringing tune-up chord. Then, swipe from the tune-up chord to the starting-chord of the song, if they're different. Repeat the process until both chords lock and ring, please. Trust me -- or at least humor me -- on this one. WIEGENLIED Date: Thu, 15 Aug 1996 13:10:33 -0400 From: Tgbari@aol.com Subject: Re: "Lords Prayer" The G. Schirmer Company, which publishes many sacred pieces, holds the copyright to the most popular melody of the Lord's Prayer. (Since the text is, mm, well over 75 years old, it is in public domain.) It is this melody that Jim Clancy used for his arrangement. Schirmer felt that the chart sounded too modern and refused permission to distribute it. This fact came to the attention of Joe Liles, then the Society's executive director, several years ago, at a time when I also worked at Harmony Hall. Joe mentioned to me that it would be great if someone came up with an arrangement acceptable to the Schirmer folks that we could publish for our members. The next day, I had one on his desk. As it happened, Joe had also arranged the song the previous night! We worked out a joint version (easier written about than done), which the Schirmer folks approved. The Society currently offers this arrangement in its catalog. As far as I know, the status of the Clancy chart has not changed in the meantime, nor has any other arrangement been authorized through Tom Barr at Harmony Foundation. Ever wondered how to get your hands on these arrangements (and a whole lot others) by Jay Giallombardo and Jim Arns?! Ever wanted to commission a new arrangement or original song by these two amazingly talented arrangers/song writers? Well, here's how - Just contact Gold-Silver-Bronze Medal Music, Inc. to request a specific title or to get on the mailing list to receive periodic updates of all the arrangements on file and being distributed by our company. The number of arrangements on file is 450 titles as of March 1, 1995 and the list is growing daily! Our snail-mail address is: 445 Laburnum Drive, Northbrook, IL 60062 (USA) Our phone numbers are: 1-800-368-8637 (U.S. Only) or 1-708-272-6854 in the Chicago area or foreign calls Our fax number is: 1-708-272-6629 Our e-mail address is: goldmedl@interaccess.com for placing orders, requesting lists or other customer service questions. Our previous e-mail address (JayGee93@aol.com) that was listed in the barbershop magazine ads is now being used by Jay Giallombardo for personal business only (see below). Our fax number has also changed to the above #. We would request that barbershop concerns be sent to the new e-mail address (goldmedl@interaccess.com) or fax number (1-708-272-6629). For all orders, we request the following information: 1) Your name and group affiliation name (i.e. chorus, quartet/ensemble) 2) Song title(s) 3) No. of copies needed so we can calculate the royalties 4) Preview (see below) and/or rush fax service ($1.00 per page of music + invoice page [a required inclusion]) 5) Any additional billing information such as group treasurer name & address. We offer a preview service of $2.50 per title. For each specific title, we will send out the music on non-photocopyable red paper (as a safeguard that the copyright holders like!!) along with an estimated invoice and a copy of our current list. If you like the piece, then you can contact us back in writing with a check for the total amount due on the invoice and we will mail to you the clean, white, legal music! It's that simple. For commission requests, we ask that you submit sheet music of the desired song title(s) and sample recording of a performance of that music where appropriate. We will route the commission information to the appropriate arranger who will then look over the materials and figure a quote for the work to be done. This quote will be relayed back to you for final approval prior to the work being commenced and completed. Besides the arranger's work fee, the commission quote will include the required permission to arrange fee paid to the appropriate copyright holders (this varies widely per copyright holder and can sometimes be negotiated). The quote will also include the necessary per copy royalties (for the sheet music created for your group) to be collected from you and forwarded on to the appropriate copyright holders. Learning tapes for any arrangements or newly commissioned works are also available for a fee of $40 for the 4 parts to be done in a part-predominant and full mix format, plus the statutory mechanical license rate of $.065436 per song/medley segment times number of copies that will be created for your group. Various recordings are also available through our company. Please check the barbershop gopher under the subheading "Sources for Barbershop Recordings" for the complete recordings list, "discography" and ordering information. If you have any other questions that are not already answered here, please feel free to contact us by any method listed above that is convenient to you, and we'll do our best to respond as quickly as possible. ADDITIONAL INTERESTING INFORMATION: Jay Giallombardo has his own personal e-mail address at: JayGee93@aol.com but he checks it infrequently, mostly for non-barbershop reasons! SO if you have an urgent question or issue which must be answered by Jay, it's probably best to send mail to the goldmedl@interaccess.com e-mail address which is checked daily. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Gospel Medley"?
